Mary Lechner, M.D., Medical Director

Mary Lechner, M.D. is a diagnostic radiologist who specializes in breast imaging at Center for Diagnostic Imaging (CDI). As Medical Director of CDI’s breast imaging services, Dr. Lechner brings more than 24 years of experience in radiology – with 17 years specifically focused on breast imaging including mammography, ultrasound, MRI, nuclear imaging and interventional procedures. As an internationally recognized breast biopsy pioneer, she played an integral role in proving the clinical value of stereotactic biopsy technology to analyze tissue to diagnose cancer in the 1990s.

Dr. Lechner continues to be a clinical professor at the University of Minnesota. She comes to CDI from the Jane Brattain Breast Center of Park Nicollet Clinics in Minneapolis, where she served as Medical Director for more than 13 years. She also held the positions of Section Head, Mammography and Staff Radiologist prior to that at Park Nicollet. Dr. Lechner completed her residency in diagnostic radiology at the University of Minnesota Hospitals in Minneapolis. She also trained briefly with Dr. Laszlo Taber, an internationally renowned mammography specialist, in Helsinki, Finland and Falun, Sweden. Dr. Lechner received her medical degree from the University of North Dakota School of Medicine in Grand Forks. While there she was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and received her undergraduate degrees in Psychology and Pre-med, graduating Summa Cum Laude.

Dr. Lechner has received many honors and awards throughout her career for her work and service in the community. She has participated in multiple clinical trials, conference presentations and authored articles for publication relating to breast imaging, computer-aided detection (CAD) and breast biopsy procedures.

Dr. Lechner was named a “Top Doctor” by Minneapolis St. Paul Magazine in 2009.
