Each year we see thousands of pediatric patients.

Why do parents and their physicians choose CDI?
  • Same-day appointments; weekend and extended hours available
  • Eight convenient outpatient centers in the metro
  • Our skilled team goes the extra mile to ensure a comfortable and successful exam
  • Since 2001, more than 99% of our young patients have completed their exam, such as MRI or CT, without sedation
  • 24-hour report turnaround to your physician

Our highly trained, compassionate staff works closely with each child and their parents or guardian throughout the imaging procedure, to answer questions and minimize anxiety. Our goal is to ensure we complete an imaging exam that will accurately guide diagnosis and treatment.

How we’ll help you Prepare for your Visit to CDI:
  • A CDI registered nurse will complete a pre-screening and medical history phone call with you if your child is 8 years old or younger. If your child is older, but you would still like an exam preview with a nurse, please call 952.525.6307.
  • During your pre-screening phone call, our nurse will provide detailed information about the exam, whether I.V. contrast is needed, eating restrictions, and provide an estimate of the length of the appointment.
  • A children’s play area is provided, including coloring books, crayons, stickers and stuffed animals to take home.
  • A child’s average time in scanner (listed below) is dependent on the area of the body being examined and whether or not I.V. contrast or light sedation is necessary.
Click on the exam your child is having below to learn more about that type of imaging exam.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) | Average Time in Scanner is 30 min.
Computed Tomography (CT) | Average Time in Scanner is 10–15 min.
  • Numbing cream is used to alleviate the sting from a needle if your child requires an I.V. for contrast during the exam.
  • CDI staff will constantly communicate with you and your child during the procedure.
  • Your child’s exam will be interpreted by a subspecialized radiologist—a doctor whose expertise is in the particular area of the body that your child is having imaged. This benefit allows for the most accurate diagnosis so your physician can determine an appropriate treatment plan.

Simple Steps for a Successful Exam

  • Talk to your child about their upcoming exam. Consider visiting CDI prior to the exam to see our play area and the equipment that your child’s exam will be performed on, and share with them how they will be positioned in an MRI or CT scanner. It may help alleviate their fears.
  • During most exams, your child can listen to their choice of music or a CD from home with headphones. They can also hold a favorite stuffed animal, blanket, non-metal toy, or pacifier.
  • Before the visit, listen to the sounds an MRI makes during a scan.

We value our pre-screening process to determine what will be best for each young patient. Completing imaging exams without sedation is our goal, however, when it is the only option, CDI offers light sedation for patients 6 years and older.

Benefits of non-sedation:
  • Increased safety with not receiving sedation medication
  • Shorter appointment
  • Typically a quicker recovery time
  • Child can return to school or day care after the exam

With CDI, our son was able to get his MRI immediately after his doctor's appointment. More importantly, CDI’s staff made our son feel very comfortable and at ease during the entire process.
