Breast Wire Localization.
MRI-guided wire localization is utilized by your physician, just prior to surgery, to assist in the location of abnormal tissue best viewed in
MRI
images. This technique helps to ensure removal of abnormal tissue, while minimizing the amount of normal breast tissue removed.
During the procedure – What to expect
A radiologist will utilize MRI imaging to place a needle into abnormal tissue in the breast.
Once the needle is in position, a thin wire is placed through the needle.
The needle is then removed, leaving the wire in place to be used as a guide for the surgeon during a breast biopsy procedure.
Once the localization is complete, a surgeon in the operating room removes the wire and the abnormal tissue.
There may be some discomfort with the procedure. However, before the needle is inserted, you will be given a numbing medication.
After the procedure –What to expect
Once the test results have been completed and confirmed, your doctor will inform you if any further breast care follow up is required. You will have a short scar in the shape of a line where the biopsy was performed. Many women feel some soreness in their breast and some swelling near the surgical site for a few days. Talk with your physician regarding when you will be able to resume normal activity.
