Center for Diagnostic Imaging (CDI) Introduces Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) for Breast Cancer Detection CDI provides a full range of breast imaging services to area physicians and patients
Center for Diagnostic Imaging (CDI) announced it has enhanced its diagnostic imaging services by adding breast MRI to its center in Geneva. In addition to breast MRI, CDI also offers screening and diagnostic mammography, computed tomography (CT), bone density imaging (DEXA), ultrasound, and x-ray in a convenient outpatient setting at its facility in the Randall Square Shopping Center on Randall Road. A high-field, short MRI scanner is one of the safest, most comfortable technologies available for breast imaging. It combines a powerful magnet with an advanced computer system and radio waves to produce accurate, detailed pictures of tissue in order to diagnose and treat the different types of breast cancer.
“CDI is committed to provide physicians and patients access to the highest quality imaging technology and overall patient care,” said Tom Tomlinson, COO, CDI. “The addition of breast MRI to our family of services enables us to provide more options for women with suspected breast cancer. Our breast imaging radiologists have practiced in the Fox Valley community for more than 30 years. Their expertise combined with this advanced technology enables us meet every patient’s needs and provide accurate diagnoses to the most complex patient cases.”
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in American women. Breast cancer is a major killer among cancers and ranks second as the leading cause of cancer deaths in American women second only to lung cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, there will be an estimated 9,300 new cases of breast cancer diagnosed in Illinois in 2005. Of those women, nearly 1,800 will die.
“Breast MRI comes into play when conventional exams such a mammography and ultrasound fail to provide the information needed to make an accurate diagnosis or guide treatment,” said Dr. Kenneth P. Sullivan, M.D., F.A.C.R. “The center’s high-field (1.5T) short MRI scanner enables us to capture highly detailed images of the breasts to:
- identify lesions versus cysts
- locate suspicious areas difficult to identify on mammograms in very dense breasts
- assist in primary or recurrent breast cancer detection
- determine the extent of breast cancer
- help referring physicians determine appropriate treatment options
- monitor breast cancer therapy
- determine breast implant integrity
“Breast MRI is currently a problem-solving diagnostic tool for certain patient populations. More research is needed to improve diagnostic performance and accuracy so that breast MRI can become an even more accepted part of the standard breast imaging,” added Sullivan.

Top shelf from start to finish. The center is always clean, the staff is always nice - they even offer to fill your coffee cup! I think other offices should take lessons from them. They gave me my results the same day and I was able to go on vacation knowing my mammogram was good. See you next year.
